Trail Running, Mountain Biking and Paddling make up the three core disciplines. The venues are beautiful and safe and make for a fantastic day out. Participants can compete, or just take part in various ways and forms, as an individual or as a team. The Full Distance event is geared for the weekend warriors and the racing athletes and a Half Distance event for the younger generation and less adventurous, the perfect platform to learn and get involved before taking it to the next level. The Kids Multisport Dash allows the youngsters to get involved in the sport and perhaps even become future champions; mom and dad are welcome to take part as well. Participants may choose between the MULTISPORT and the MULTIX events. The full course MULTISPORT comprises a 5km trail run, 20km MTB and 5km paddle while the short course is made up of a 2.5km trail run, 10km MTB and 2.5km paddle. The MULTIX caters for the non-paddlers and comprises a 5km trail run, 20km MTB and 2.5km trail run and also offers a half-distance event. The KIDS MULTISPORT DASH offers youngsters between the ages of U7 and U11 their own taste of multisport. For the first time this year, the organisers have introduced a TRAIL RUN option (5km / 15km) and a Mountain Bike race (40km /20km) to cater for those individuals who prefer to concentrate on one discipline ! The Open University - Working in Partnership

The Open University and The IIE / Varsity College are working together to offer graduates an opportunity to achieve an internationally recognised honours degree from the Open University. The agreement between The IIE / Varsity College and The Open University enables students who have successfully completed The IIE Bachelor of Arts degree in Corporate Communication or Bachelor of Commerce degree at Varsity College to progress with their studies by registering directly with The Open University for the equivalent of the final year of a BA (Honours) Open degree or a BSc (Honours) Open degree. The Partner Varsity College was founded 21 years ago and today enjoys the reputation of being at the forefront of private tertiary education in South Africa. Riaan Schoeman – VC Olympic Swimmer

Riaan’s Journey Believe it or not, Riaan Schoeman, the 22 year old Varsity College student and 2012 Olympic qualifier, used to be scared of the water! When Riaan was 8 years old he joined a swimming club in Durban North in order to get over this fear. And get over it he did! Soon, the only thing he will be getting over is miles of ocean as he wings it to the Royal Palace in Monaco with to stay with Princess Charlene, followed by a journey to the Olympic village in London. Riaan moved on from the Durban North swimming club to training at Kings Park in Durban, but at first he did lots of other sports as well. In grade 7, he decided that swimming was the one passion that he would follow. On the advice of his coach, Alistair Hatfield, Riaan dropped all the other sports and focused exclusively on swimming. Ever since then, his training has been absolutely intense. He has been training for two hours every morning, and two and a half hours every afternoon, along with his coach for ten years, to get to this point! Riaan went to Durban High School (DHS) and Oakridge College, in a solid routine of swimming, school, and some socialising on the weekends. At 13 years old, Riaan won his age category in the Midmar Mile. This win gave him the taste of success and inspiration he needed to justify the intense training. The next big milestone for Riaan was the first national record that he broke at the age of 14. These successes resulted in Riaan travelling internationally for the World Youth Championships. Now, there was a new reason to keep training and keep achieving – the international travel bug hit Riaan, and doing well at swimming was a great way doorway to seeing the world. By 2008, Riaan had not really thought about qualifying for the Olympics in Beijing, but unexpectedly he did, breaking Terence Parkins 400m medley record – once again, the hard work and sacrifice paid off with results. So Riaan went to the Olympics and placed 11th in the 400m medley, and was the second youngest there at just 18 years old. An exciting part of this experience was having Ryk Neethling and Roland Pienaar as team leaders, which Riaan says was ‘inspirational, they gave great guidance’. Riaan Schoeman – the road to 2012 Olympics After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Riaan turned his attention towards his education, and his journey at Varsity College started. Riaan is studying a BCom in Industrial and Organisational Psychology and plans to complete the Degree mid-2013. In 2009, Riaan won the Midmar Mile open event, which was a huge achievement for him. In the years building up to 2012 and the London Olympics, Riaan trained as hard as ever but also found himself branching out and experiencing other areas of life. Beside studying, he enjoyed taking up tennis as a hobby, as well as trying his hand at a few triathlons and some day trading on the stock exchange. The next swimming milestone was a bronze medal in the 400m medley at the Commonwealth Games in 2010. The time came to shift focus to London. The training quantity and load increased, and Riaan attended a lot of international swimming camps. His observations on international training methods vs the South African experience is that the South African ‘scene’ is a lot more sociable and lifestyle oriented, whereas the international camps had a more ‘all or nothing’ approach. He feels that he benefitted greatly from the international training experience and adapted his training accordingly. Riaan, like all sportspeople, has not only had triumph and great results. He experienced a disappointment when he only placed 9th in the 2011 World Championships, after he had been working and training really well. However, the set back was not a major one and Riaan qualified for the London Olympics in the trial in April 2012. Riaan is staying in Durban until the 14 July, so he can finish up with his exams. He will then be joining the rest of the South African Olympic swimmers in Monaco, being hosted by South African swimmer, Princess Charlene. After a week and a half at the Palace, Riaan will fly into the Olympic Village on the 23 July, and be racing on the 28 July. When asked what his goals for the Olympics are, Riaan says ‘I want to do better than I did in Beijing, soak up the atmosphere, support my team mates, experience London and meet up with some friends.’ The months of May and June have been stepped up in training intensity, which will taper off toward the beginning of July when training will consist of fine tuning rather than intense training, so that he is rested for the actual Olympic event. Riaan eats very healthily and does everything in his power to stay healthy, including getting as much rest as possible. In addition to training and racing, he mentioned that the Olympic Village always involved a LOT of walking – even just to the dining hall and back! He says ‘The atmosphere in the Olympic Village is just incredible, you are surrounded by the best athletes in the world, you see Roger Federer in the apartment block next to you, and Usain Bolt at the table next to you in the dining hall!’ In summary, Riaan felt that what really has given him the platform to get this far is the support of his family, friends and coach (Alistair Hatfield). They have given up a lot for many years, taking him and fetching him and lending their unwavering support, for which he is really grateful. When asked for advice to give other sportspeople, Riaan says ‘You can find focus when you love what you do. Without the love, it would be impossible to keep that focus. My advice is to never give up, to dream, to set goals and to work hard.’

Varsity College Announces New Qualifications

Together with the IIE, Varsity College constantly evaluates its programme offerings. This is to ensure that they remain current, relevant and in line with local and global standards, trends and best practice. We would like to inform you of the most recent developments. Post Graduate Degrees Currently, we offer support to the post graduate UNISA degrees in Accounting Science and Psychology. In order to extend this offering we be launching the UNISA BCom Honours in Business Management in 2013. This exciting programme will allow students aspiring towards a career in Business Management to further their studies, and also allows our current UNISA BCom students an option to enrol for tuition in this UNISA Honours programme at Varsity College. In addition to the above degree, we will also be launching two post graduate programmes from the IMM Graduate School of Marketing. Firstly the B.Phil Honours in Marketing Management will allow students who have studied marketing in their undergraduate qualification to further their studies in this exciting field. The second post graduate launch is that of the Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing Management, allowing students with no marketing background in their undergraduate degree to achieve a qualification in mark Independent Institute of Education (IIE) Qualifications We have worked very closely with the IIE in the design, structure and development of various degrees, diplomas and higher certificates. We are enormously proud to announce that Varsity College will be offering the following programmes from 2013. The IIE BBA degree in Hospitality Management Our fourteen-year journey to this point has included collaborating with the International College of Hotel Management (ICHM) in Adelaide, Australia. We are delighted to announce that we are now able to offer our own fully accredited 3 year degree programme in hospitality, one of only 3 in the country. We will definitely continue our relationship with the ICHM and discussions will start shortly around the definition of this relationship into the future. As we offer more IIE degree programmes the need arises to offer access programmes into these degrees for students who may have not have achieved the entrance requirement at school level. Not only do these programmes offer credit for some modules into subsequent programmes, but they provide options for students who want to study a CHE accredited programme in a year. To this end Varsity College will, from 2013, offer the following IIE Higher Certificates. The IIE Higher Certificate in Event Management South Africa finds itself more and more on the world stage, hosting a variety of global events as well as more standard functions such as conferences and weddings. This makes event management an exciting opportunity we are pleased to be able to cater to specifically. The IIE Higher Certificate in IT Support Services This certificate offers students the opportunity to enter the rapidly changing and lucrative field of IT support after one year. It also allows the opportunity to access our two existing IT qualifications (Network Management and Software Development) with credit for some of the subjects they have studied in the Higher Certificate. We are confident that the quality and relevance of these programmes will not only take our qualifications to the next level, but also our student’s experience, their employability and career opportunities. Swimming Riaan Schoemann (Durban North student) did an Olympic Qualifying time in the 400m IM and will be heading to the London Olympics in July. Varsity College Marine Sursfki Series Grant v d Walt finished an impressive 2nd overall in the Marine Series only a few points behind World Champ Hank McGregor. Check out the TV coverage TONIGHT (9th May) on SuperSport6 at 18h30 Trial Running CPT Trail Running Captain, Daniel Matthews, recently took part in the grueling Platteklip Charity Challenge on Table Mountain. The idea of the race is to test the runners to see who can summit Table Mountain the most times. Against some of the top contenders in the country, Daniel truly did us proud coming in joint 3rd, summiting our wonder of the world an awesome 9 times. Karkloof MTB Classic This event was a superb example of how the Sports Life initiative has evolved and making some waves in the MTB arena. There were 3 races over the weekend and we had 6 campuses participating (Sandton, Midrand, Pretoria, PMB, Westville & Durban North) with more than 22 students and staff all racing in VC colours. We created a mini VC student village as the students camped in Karkloof for the weekend. We got some fantastic results in all three races so it was a great combination of social and competitive participation as well as great camaraderie and fun! * Friday - Westville’s captain Evan Van Der Spuy (Buck-Norris) placed 2nd overall in the 20km Night Race * Saturday – Travis Browning from PMB placed 3rd in the downhill Enduro race * Sunday – Evan was placed 13th in the 60km race and 2nd junior category. Mark Malherbe (PMB MTB Captain) also participated in the 60km and came 15th overall. In the 40km race Dani Jenson from PMB came 17th overall and 3rd in his age group. Varsity College Golf Academy At the recent KZN Club Championships Bryce Bibby played superbly well to come 3rd at Royal Durban tournament and Kurt Northmore finished in the top 10 at Kloof Country Club tournament. Dusi Marathon Race & Non-Stop Dusi Kwanda Mlope (PMB Canoe Captain) achieved fantastic results in both the main Dusi race finishing 4th and 2nd in the non-stop Dusi race. Fantastic Results! Tsitsikamma MTB Challenge PE MTB club took part in the Tsitsikamma 23km challenge. It was a great weekend as they all travelled up the night before, the team bonded and woke up ready for the day ahead. Sam Berrington the captain did very well and finishing 3rd, Sadi Shelan came in 2nd in the ladies race and Eric Berrington came 5th overall. It was the 1st trip away as a club and it was a brilliant weekend of good healthy fun. GBUL Basketball League Sandton Men’s Basketball team as has achieved some great results in the GUBL winning their 1st match against UJ 40-36 and beating Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in another very intense and closely contested game 56-54. Varsity College Durban Surfski School Gets Gauteng Paddlers into the Sea!

Varsity College and Sigma Academy have created a programme full of excitement, adventure and personal development. The Varsity College Durban Surfski school conducted a clinic over the weekend 5-6 May, to give 10 aspiring paddlers from Gauteng their first opportunity to see, and experience, paddling in the sea. The Gauteng Canoe Union identified a number of young paddlers from various areas in Gauteng who had, due to income restraints, never had an opportunity to travel and see the sea. Shaun Austin, a Varsity College Sports Life Captain, coached the clinic and was so impressed with the enthusiasm and abilities of the paddlers that they were entered into the first surfski race of the season, held on Sunday 6 May. After three days of fresh sea air, the Gauteng paddlers went back, determined to get back to the sea again as soon as they can!

Doing the ‘Braindance’ netted Stefan Heyns a R100 000 Varsity College Bursary

Varsity College ran an online competition called the ‘Braindance’, which saw hundreds of students and would-be students creating virtual dances and having lots of fun. The lucky winner, Stefan Heyns, from Pretoria, won a bursary worth R100 000k to study. We have a quick Q & A session with Stefan to find out how it feels to win big! How does it feel to have won a bursary worth R100 000? It feels awesome! I think it is any student’s dream to win this kind of prize and I am very excited about this opportunity. How do you plan to use the bursary? I plan to use the bursary to further my Bcom degree, with majors in management, accounting, mercantile law and economics. How will receiving this bursary change things for your studies? This bursary will open up a lot of possibilities for me and will alleviate some of the stresses that come with studying whilst working and obviously the strain of financing it myself. It will also give me the opportunity to take classes which are very beneficial, especially when taking accounting and economics modules which can be a real killer when you’re studying them by yourself. Tell us about yourself: who you are, interests, what career you’re interested in. Well, I am a part-time student, doing my Bcom through Unisa while working night-shift at a psychiatric hospital in Pretoria. I have a girlfriend, we have been together for three years. I enjoy socializing when my schedule allows for it; unfortunately I don’t have any hobbies at this stage as my studies don’t allow it. I am very interested in finance, especially in derivativesand hedgefunds and hope to pursue a career in a corporate environment, ideally working forand eventually becoming CEO of a fortune 500 company. My degree choice was made so as to prepare me to fulfill a meaningful role in any firm and, in time, to progress to executive level. After completing my studies I hope to do an internship programme at a respectable firm and progress from there, eventually I would like to get my accreditation as a CA SA.
