Varsity College and UFS Partner for Law Degree Professor Jansen addresses launch Varsity College has partnered with the University of the Free State (UFS) to offer a 4 year Bachelor of Laws qualification, through the School of Open Learning at UFS and supported by Varsity College campuses nationwide, said Odette Francesconi, MD of Varsity College, at a launch function held at the University of the Free State on 25 July. Rector and Vice Chancellor of the UFS, Professor Jonathan Jansen delivered an address, discussing the benefits of the outstanding quality of the law curriculum at UFS and the innovative teaching and learning and national support infrastructure that Varsity College brings to the table. ‘With this partnership students will get the best of both worlds in higher education. This is what is possible when two dynamic partners like the university and Varsity College come together’ said Prof Jansen. Varsity College is a brand of the Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), which is owned by the ADvTECH Group, a JSE listed company invested in human capital and through education and resourcing. CEO of ADvTECH, Mr Frank Thompson stated that he is overjoyed about the project and potential. “This is a new beginning for Varsity College, ADvTECH and the UFS. Learning together, the slogan for this project is thus very appropriate. We are also excited to bring further programmes to the UFS and Varsity College partnership,” he said. The UFS Faculty of Law is one of the oldest and most distinguished faculties of law in South Africa, as well as being the only faculty of law situated in Bloemfontein, the judicial capital of the country. Prof. Johan Henning, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the UFS said: "I am very positive and enthusiastic about this new partnership. This new beginning is a fulfillment of a dream. We want to make this an enriching experience for staff and students from both the university as well as Varsity College." At the event, Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of The IIE, said: ‘The partnership with the UFS is an example of the potential that is inherent in public private partnerships, to increase the range of high quality options available to students’.
