The matric results are out! Whether you are ecstatic, happy enough or a bit disappointed, don’t stress, take a deep breath and start thinking about your future, and your options.

It’s an exciting, but tough, decision to make. You need to make sure you are completely clued up, and can make your decision armed with knowledge and wisdom! Varsity College is still open for registration throughout January, and we have organised Faculty Days for certain programmes on each campus.

USSA Swimming & Waterpolo Tour to East London
Varsity College entered a team for the 1st time into the USSA (University Sports South Africa) swimming gala and waterpolo tournament. The swimmers and waterpolo guys not only put VC firmly on the map in the university aquatics arena but dominated in both disiplines!

Waterpolo Results
The VC team made it through to the semi-finals with some of these fantastic results (Above) in the round robin stage of the tournament. Despite a heroic effort in the semi-final they lost 10 – 6 to Maties and then dug deep in the 3rd & 4th play-off match to beat UJ 11 – 6 coming an impressive 3rd overall! We also had one student, Mark Spencer, make the SA students team.
Swimming Results
With a very small team we still managed to dominate and ruffle some feathers! In total the team racked up 16 gold, 10 silver and 4 bronze medals! We also had four swimmers that were chosen for the SA students team namely; Rohan Jacobs, Riaan Schoemann, Rene Warnes and Bianca Meyer. Rene Warnes was also awarded the “Best Ladies Performance” for achieving 742 FINA points in the 400IM. Rene also set a USSA record in the 200m & 400m Free and Rohan Jacobs set a USSA record in the 200m Backstroke!
Varsity College Sunday Tribune Capital K
The Capital K which took place at Midmar Dam this past weekend and is one of the main qualifiers for the Midmar Mile. This lovely family orientated event has races for both competitive and social swimmers.
The 10km Open Water KZN Champs took place on the Saturday and Jessica Roux, a Durban North student, came 1st in the ladies race, a fantastic achievement!
On Sunday, most of our student swimmers who had just landed back from a successful tour in East London competed for the VC team in the 1km team event and we got top honours with the team walking away with some awesome prizes for their efforts!
Rene Warnes also raced in the 1km individual ladies race and won the 14 to 30 year category… continuing to fly the VC flag high!
VC MTB Relay Challenge part of the Willows Challenge in PE
The Varsity College MTB Relay Challenge got off to an early start on Saturday, 26 November with the kiddies MTB race. VC and Choc were out in full force to support the future MTB stars (and who knows future Sports Life students).
The main VC MTB Relay Challenge kicked off later in the day and the 17 teams competing were given 3 hours to complete as many laps as possible. The winning team managed 14 laps which equals 70km. The VC Chill Zone, next to the transition area, was stocked with bottomless amounts of Powerade which proved extremely popular during the relay breaks.
Team Chevrolet Warriors, with riders from the EP cricket team headed by Johan Botha, were seen “chilling” in our VC chill zone along with the SuperSport crew … watch out for this event on SuperSport from the 26th December – 6th Jan!

TOP CLASS GOLF ACADEMY BEING LAUNCHED IN KZN
Varsity College has identified a need to offer talented young golfers in Kwazulu Natal the opportunity to pursue their golfing dreams here in South Africa. There has been a trend over the past 15 years whereby students after completing their Matric, pursue golf scholarships and bursaries in the USA. This has meant that South Africa’s loss is USA’s gain.
In line with the Varsity College philosophy they are able to provide these young golfers with an opportunity to pursue their dream of playing golf competitively; while at the same time, getting a recognized qualification through Varsity College, a top quality structured golf programme and a strict health and wellness programme; covering all the critical aspects to develop a holistic top class golfer.
Varsity College identified golf was as one of the key sports that fits within their Sports Life vision and plan to introduce golf as a sport across all campuses through the introduction of the Varsity College Golf Academy in 2012.
There are three key components to the Academy namely; golf coaching, academics and a health and wellness programme. All three components of the Academy will not work independently, but rather as a collective, each one is dependent on the other for success and longevity.
The coaching component will take place at the Mt Edgecombe Driving Range, which is on the Mt Edgecombe Country Club Estate. George Harvey, who was the Head Coach for the Ernie Els Golf Foundation, will guide the players through a structured programme which will develop, grow and equip the players for competitive golf in the future. George has coached a number of SA’s top young golfers such as Louis Oosthuizen, British Open Champion and Charl Shwartzel, Masters Champion. The Academy will also be offering enrichment courses through the academic year which will cover aspects such as Like Skills, Course Management, Golf Etiquette and Sports Psychology.
The academic component will be hosted and managed by the Varsity College Westville Campus. Varsity College will be offering the following courses that Academy students can choose from; Higher Certificate in Business Principles & Practice, Diploma in Sport Development and Management and Bachelor of Arts Corporate Communications. Varsity College will provide a structured timetable with lectures either in the morning or in the afternoon, depending on the course schedule and will also provide a fantastic student support system to equip the students with study and time management skills which will ensure they are keeping on top of their studies.
The Health and Wellness programme will take place at the Club Zero Gym at Clifton College High Performance Centre in Morningside, Durban. Hayley Cassim will be personally overseeing the assessment, development and progress of all members of the Academy. The Club Zero Gyms are fully equipped with the state of the art gym equipment, which is ideally suited to the needs and wants of the golfers in the Academy. The Academy students will be given advice on nutrition and personalized health and wellness plans.
Throughout the year the Academy students will participate in a range local and national tournaments as well as team building activities culminating with an opportunity to represent Varsity College at the national university golf tournament.

Of interest to prospective students is that, through an exciting collaboration with the Open University of the United Kingdom, graduates may articulate to a UK Honours degree, with the equivalent of an additional full-time year of online study. This association represents a progressive step in South African higher education, given the demand for international qualifications, and paving the way for graduates’ qualifications to be converted into global career opportunities.
The BCom degree complements the recently launched Varsity College IIE BA in Corporate Communication, which also allows Open University articulation.
BCom students may specialise in the fields of Business and Strategic Management or Business and Financial Management. The association with the Open University gives students graduating with this BCom the opportunity to carry up to 240 points of credit transfer towards a UK Honours degree, with the equivalent of one additional full-time year of online study.
The Open University is the largest university in the United Kingdom and has more than 60 000 students studying qualifications directly from the university delivered through local partners or, through Open University validated programmes. Varsity College Student places second at Duathlon Championships in Spain. Ole!
Bronwyn Gordon, a first year sports development and management student at Varsity College Sandton, represented South Africa and Varsity College at the 2011 World Duathlon Championship in Gijon, Spain.
Bronwyn competed with a number of other S.A. team mates and took part in the sprint series, 16-19 age category, and placed 2nd in her category with a time of 01:17:34.
