Varsity College 12hr Pure Adrenaline MTB Race
This year Varsity College took over the title sponsorship of the 12 Hour Pure Adrenaline MTB Race and the participation, vibe and competition was bigger and better this year. Varsity College entered teams into all categories: 12 Hour (Solo), 3 Hour (2 man team), 6 hour (4 man staff team) and 12 hour (4-10 riders). Despite a strong competitive group of riders and some extreme weather conditions Varsity College came 1st and 2nd in all the categories they entered.
• Paul van Zweel (PTA student) won the 12 Hour solo category,
• Jared and Matthew (Sandton) came 2nd in the 3 hour category,
• Justin, Victor and Tyrone (Sandton staff members) came 1st in the 6 hour category
• 12 hour team made up of student riders from Durban North, PMB and Sandton came 2nd missing the gold medal by 3 minutes split difference.
A huge congratulations to all the riders and a special thanks to those who travelled from PMB and Durban North!
Fish River Canoe Marathon – 2011 USSA Canoe Race
Varsity College truly dominated at this year’s Fish River Canoe Marathon which is Africa’s premier canoe race and also doubles up as the USSA Canoe Race. Grant vd Walt (Durban North) won the event with his partner for the 3rd K2 year in a row in record time and we also had SOBT student Mark Mulder (Durban North) come 9th with his partner. The ladies also did us proud with Jenna Ward (Westville) coming 4th overall and the 1st junior ladies as well as Jenna Starr (PMB) coming 8th overall and was the 1st U23 ladies double; these fantastic results meant that VC won the USSA ladies race...which is an excellent achievement!! BSG Energade Triathlon Series
Varsity College triathlon clubs around the country are focussing on this series as there is a very competitive tertiary category that we would like to dominate this year and if the 1st two races are anything to go by we’ll hopefully be the top Varsity at the end of the series. Race 1 at Roodeplaat Dam - Henri Schoemann (Durban North) came 7th overall and in race 2 at Hartebeespoort Dam Henri came 4th and we also had two teams from the Pretoria campus who finished 1st and 2nd in the tertiary category and 2nd and 7th respectively in the overall team category...Fantastic results for VC!!
Rooibos Freshpak Tea Clanwilliam Triathlon – Cape Town
CPT students - Kelli Leibbrandt, Craig Getz and Daniel Matthews took part in their 1st triathlon event as a VC team. They entered the mixed team category and did VC proud by coming 1st in that category which meant our newly formed team took home gold medals!! There was some fierce competition on the day as this is a popular race amongst the triathlon community in CPT. Craig Getz also participated in the 1.5km swim earlier that morning, where he finished overall 5th but 1st with a wetsuit.

Varsity College hosts a charity golf day in aid of the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa
On the 7 October 2011, Varsity College Pietermaritzburg joined it’s sister campuses all over the country to host Charity Golf day at the Victoria Golf Club in aid of the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa.
The golf day was the end result of a team effort by the Sports Management 2nd year students, the Student Liaison Body, the VC Cares group and the staff of Varsity College, making both a Corporate Social investment initiative and work integrated learning experience for the students. The student involvement is indicative of Varsity College’s educational philosophy of developing students holistically; maintain a healthy balance between their studies and sport, social, cultural and community engagement activities.
Those that participated enjoyed a game of golf on the beautiful and challenging course at the Victoria Country Club. The day culminated in a prize-giving dinner and charity auction, with the latter thoroughly supported by the guests. Generous sponsorship of tees, prizes, donations and entries into the golf day by local businesses and individuals ensured that Varsity College raised over R25 000 to assist CHOC in the amazing work that they do to provide support in the form of CHOC lodges and Houses to both children afflicted with cancer and their families. These ‘ensure that parents have a home away from home to be close to their children who are undergoing chemotherapy , radiation and other procedures’ said Agie Govender, divisional manager of CHOC, KwaZulu Natal.

Varsity College Cape Town Moot Evening
Varsity College Cape Town's annual Moot Court Competition was held on the evening of September 7th 2011. Judge Andre Le Grange, Judge of the Western Cape High Court, presided. The trial itself was rated by all present as a riveting success - one could not hear a pin drop as the arguments proceeded.
LexisNexis provided token gifts for all particpants, a special token for the judge and book prizes for the two competing teams. The proceedings were tense at times, and information sometimes came through at the last minute. However, Judge Andre felt that it was a good reflection of real life in a courtroom, and the students learned a tremendous amount from being in situ.

Varsity College Hotel Management Star Graduates in Australia
Varsity College and the International College of Hotel Management (ICHM) launched a student bursary initiative that allowed one Hotel Management 3 student to study the prestigious Bachelor of International Hotel Management degree at a campus in Adelaide, Australia in 2010 /2011.
Varsity College Sandton student, Megan Kalil, emerged victorious from a rigorous selection process, to take the ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to study in Australia, with all flights, tuition and accommodation covered by Varsity College. The selection process took academic achievement, industry conduct and feedback, a letter of motivation and panel interviews into account.
Megan completed the accelerated degree programme in 6 months, and then worked in Australia for another six months. She thoroughly enjoyed her graduation ceremony.

Teaching Entrepreneurship and Giving Back
Some youngsters from Eastern Province Children's Home joined in the fun on the 13th of September at Varsity College's Mini Market Day, run by the First year students doing a Diploma in Business Marketing and Entrepreneurship (DBME) at the College. The kids were given a financial budget to spend and loved getting involved in the activities available such as a jumping castle, face painting and numerous food stalls, while at the same time raising awareness about children in need and capturing the hearts of the students.

VC Sports Bulletin
Cape Town - The VC Water Polo men’s A side played in the semi-final of the Winter League against SACS on a cold Thursday night. It was a tightly contested game but unfortunately we ended up losing 4-2 to a SACS team that had too much fire power for us. This is our 1st year in the water polo club scene in CPT so this is a brilliant achievement because even Maties one of the strongest clubs in the province didn’t make the semi’s! Well done guys!
Sandton – Jared, the MTB Captain, and another MTB club member entered the Spring Classic MTB race in Fourways. It was a enjoyable race and Jared did VC proud by winning his age group!
Durban North – The Durban North Pirates are the winners of this year’s KZN Inter-campus Sports Day...winning by a narrow margin of 3.5 points to the Westville Cowboys.
Westville – The current NASW netball champions continued their winning streak by coming out tops in the 3rd division at the Highway Action Arena! They won the gold final 28 – 25!
Pretoria – Estiaan, the triathlon captain, has been training his team really hard and it all paid off at the Ufolio Golf Estate Triathlon at Naboomspruit as Estiaan came first and the VCPTA club team came first in the team event!
Port Elizabeth – VCPE men’s soccer team have been on a winning streak in recent weeks...beating Damelin 5 – 0, drawing 1 – 1 with Alex High School and beating Edu College 5 – 3.
Pietermaritzburg – Gina, the running captain, has been working hard on developing their VCPMB Running Club so it was great to see 5 students competing in the Capital Climb and 14 students and staff compete in the PMB Spar Ladies Race this last weekend!
Cape Town – Sean Rice, the surfski captain, has been flying the VC flag high overseas in the USA and Portugal by finishing an impressive 3rd in the US surfski champs and 2nd in the Chicago Shoreline Marathon!
Varsity College Old Boys U20B team played in the final of the Murray Cup Knock Out Competition U20B division and won! A nice foundation to develop a strong U20 squad for next season! Both VC Old Boys 1st and 2nd teams also made it through to the semi-final stage of the Murray Cup.

Varsity College Moot final 2011
Westville Law Students test their skills in front of real judges.
As part of the integrated approach to studying, Varsity College Westville hosts an annual moot court for its final year law students. A moot court is a constructed court platform where law students are given the opportunity to practice their advocacy skills.
Twelve Varsity College Westville Law students participated in the moot court and from this, four were selected to go to the finals. The finalists were Cassy Vorster, Fatima Laher, Nischal Patel and Skye Krummeck. Cassy Vorster and Skye Krummeck argued the appellants case and Fatima Laher and Nischal Patel were the respondents. The judges who presided over the moot court were Johan Ploos van Amstel and Soma Naidoo.
The finals were held on the 31 August at the Westville Country Club. The room was filled with excitement and some nerves as the final four were preparing their cases. Family, friends and lecturers were all there to encourage and support the finalists.
Once the case started, the judges were introduced and the participants began to defend their cases to the best of their abilities. As they argued, the judges began to question the 4 participants in order to push their limits and test their true advocacy skills. Both cases were defended exceptionally well. The judges were then left with the difficult task of choosing the winner and runner up of the Varsity College Moot Final 2011. The Winner was Cassy Vorster and the runner-up was Nischal Patel, however, all students involved gained very valuable experience from the event.
Awards of certificates and trophies were presented to all participating students. The four students that made their cases in the final received vacation work, whilst the winner and runner up received book vouchers from Lexis Nexis to the value of R1000.00 and R500.00 respectively.

Eye Care Awareness with Retina SA and Varsity College
Retina South Africa is a non-profit organisation dedicated to finding the cause of, and treatment for, retinal degenerative disorders. While aggressively promoting research to resolve the problem, they also aim to do as much as possible to assist sufferers in coping with their condition.
Varsity College students had a great time with Gail Cillie and her guide dog Toga getting in "Minute to Win It" spirit, raising awareness about Eye Care through attempting various challenges while being blindfolded. These activities were staged as a build up to an exhibition that will be taking place on campus on Thursday the 22nd of September 2011, where free screenings will be done for students.

iLead Conference 2011
One hundred and forty future leaders from the top schools around the country gathered in Pretoria for 3 days of powerful leadership inspiration. Grade 11 learners were privileged to experience at the 2011 ‘iLead’ Conference, held at St Albans College in Pretoria 29 – 31 August 2011. Top Billing’s charismatic Dr Michael Mol and Talk Radio 702 DJ and journalist David O’Sullivan were on hand to be a part of this event.
Varsity College and St Albans College have collaborated to host and create this initiative to guide learners who are about to take up leadership positions within their schools. These learners will no doubt move on to being the leaders and captains of industry in their chosen careers, so it is important that they are equipped with the skills to do this in an inspired and informed way.
The conference was an intense mix of talks and workshop-based learning sessions and live scenarios.
Michael Mol spoke to the learners about strengths-based leadership - focusing on your own and others’ strengths and capitalising on these.
Eight different speakers gave their perspective on different aspects of leadership, such as that of the African context, self-leadership, courageous leadership and the challenges of leadership.
Learners were mixed up into groups from different schools and had to make the leap between listening to someone speak about a leadership concept, and putting it into action with a task, as well as show or discuss how they would implement the concept within their school.
One of the tasks was called ‘World Chef Conference’ – learners were given the task of finding ingredients and cooking a chicken – without the benefit of a kitchen to hand. Many fires later; gourmet chicken was enjoyed by all!
The feedback from the 140 boys and girls in attendance was that the learning curve was outstanding. Their dedicated participation in every talk and activity showed just how captivated and involved they were.

One of the tasks was called ‘World Chef Conference’ – learners were given the task of finding ingredients and cooking a chicken – without the benefit of a kitchen to hand. Many fires later; gourmet chicken was enjoyed by all!
The feedback from the 140 boys and girls in attendance was that the learning curve was outstanding. Their dedicated participation in every talk and activity showed just how captivated and involved they were.

School pupils show their intelligence
Varsity College Pretoria hosted its 4th annual School Quiz on the 6th of September 2011, at the Pretoria Boys High School. A total of 21 of Pretoria’s top schools entered their teams into the quiz event; including Abbotts College, Hillview High School, Hoërskool Oos-Moot, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool and Pretoria High School for Girls.
Nicole Flint, a former Miss South Africa hosted the event, which consisted of questions from seven categories including history, sport and general knowledge.
As the quiz started out the different teams did extremely well; but the competition soon became stiff during the second and third round. Top teams consisted of Crawford College, Hoërskool Montana, Pretoria Boys High School and Hoërskool Waterkloof.
Unfortunately, only one team could take the stunning Albert Einstein Schools Quiz floating trophy. Crawford College was crowned the champions for the Varsity College Pretoria Schools Quiz 2011, taking home a cash prize of R 1 000.00 per team member and a Varsity College full two year bursary. Sutherland High School took second place banking a cash prize of R 500.00 per team member and a one year full Varsity College bursary and in third place was Pretoria Boys High School taking home a cash prize of R 250.00 per team member and a one year full Varsity College bursary.

Thato successfully mixes her studies and her work
Thato Mathe is a second year Diploma in Public Relations student at Varsity College Sandton.
She is also a host and assistant for an events company called ‘Dinner in the Sky’ Events, and works with different companies that co-ordinate PR events. ‘My PR knowledge I have gained during lectures have come in very handy. I have learned to interact with people, thus exposing and representing the brand I work for. I find it really easy to formulate my own strategy for the day, and to familiarise myself with the company’s marketing strategy, project and process management’, says Thato.
Thato is self motivated, willing to learn, dedicated, adaptable and she believes that she can achieve everything she sets her mind to. She sets her own targets and strives to impress every time, and that applies to both her personal and her professional lives. On completion of her diploma, she wants to study towards study a Corporate Communications degree at Varsity College. Following this, she intends to work for some of South Africa's leading companies in this sector.
When Thato was asked which events she has worked on and what she learnt in the process, her answer was as follows: ‘The freshest to my memory is the Castle Milk Stout event, which was called “Pause in the Sky”. It was an exciting public relations approach from the company as it encouraged people to spare a moment for a sip of Castle milk stout and enjoy the journey, so they say ‘There Is A Journey In Every Moment’. I have learnt that it is very important to follow your process plan, but to have fun at the same time’. This student takes her studies very seriously, and is determined to pass well. She feels that it is very important to keep in mind why one is studying towards a particular qualification, because it is this that will help you maintain the drive towards what you are studying.
Her role model is her father. He always said do good and good will come to you and work hard to your utmost ability and someone will notice it. ‘I have watched him closely and I can see that he practices what he preaches’ says Thato.

One Young World Summit: from Zurich to beyond
Why do we care about people that are so far away from us, that we’ll never meet?” These were the opening words of Prince HKH Haakon of Norway, which drew me closer as he so passionately spoke about global dignity. That question is essentially the reason for the One Young World gathering- for individuals who care about what is happening around them. For me, it simply means giving people respect in the form of giving people my full attention when they speak to me and realising that a human soul is fragile but very powerful in its own right, and it is vital that people are well taken care of.
People and social media
I could not have been at the summit had it not been for people, and social media. This was a highlight for me as I could relate with the Egyptian revolution starter, Wael Ghonim ; “the magic is not in the tools, it’s in how we use the tools.” Wael Ghonim and Oscar Morales spoke about social media and the power of its influence in the world. My campaign platform for winning the Clearasil competition was Facebook, thus I could relate. But most importantly, we need to remember the people behind the social media activity, because the cause being driven lies in the people.
Fixing World Health
One of the projects I will be starting is inspired by Jamie Oliver, who spoke about world obesity. He spoke about a subject I know all too well; because I myself am testament to this, as well as being someone who has had a life long struggle with weight loss, which is a journey I conquer daily, and I did not disagree with a single thing he said on the platform. I love his zest for food and nutrition. Because of his talk, I want to implement a nutrition programme for enhancing academic performance for students at universities, especially at res and local schools, and nutrition education:
“You won’t die young if you don’t do your maths homework. If you don’t learn about food, you will.”- Jamie Oliver.
Women up
An aspiration of mine is also to instill and maintain confidence and self-empowerment in young women and to equip them to live up to their full potential and simultaneously building their leadership skills, particularly reiterated by a statement made by a OYW councillor, Fatima Bhutto; that whatever is given to a woman is multiplied. I am going to start a programme which does this, while participants of the programme give back to the community through volunteer work and fundraising for various organisations. My vision for women in the world, is for every single one to be the best that she can be, with what she has been given by God.
What does this mean for Africa?
This means that there are live change agents roaming the streets of Africa. I was not the only delegate from Africa. African presence was loud and proud at the summit, with the second biggest delegation following Europe! Because of the statistic, you can be positive about the future. It is not
only an honour to represent the continent, it is a responsibility we take to heart and my own personal agenda to do the best that I can in the world, for the greater good.
The One Young World Summit brought 1200 young people together representing 170 countries, each bring a superpower of some sort to the conference. We really all want to save the world! We all see that change is possible, but we know that we cannot do it alone and we know that it will not be easy, but the essential property in us is that we believe in our causes and they are not for selfish gain. I was privileged to have travelled over Africa to 170 countries in one city, for this experience and inspiration- but I promise you that inspiration is sitting right next to you- it is in all of us.

High tea for Reuven residents
Each year the senior residents of Reuven Home in Rossettenville look forward to a tea party hosted by the first year Public Relations students from Varsity College Sandton. This year, 26 August was chosen to commemorate the role of senior citizens in society at the Reuven Home and to honour the elderly for their contribution to the community.
With the assistance of various sponsors the students provided spot prizes and a hamper filled with goodies for each of the 100 attending residents, as well as in serving food for the day to each of them. Ballet and hip-hop dancing performances, karaoke and a magician kept the residents entertained as they enjoyed their tea and snacks.
In the process of showing appreciation for the senior citizens, the students were also able to entertain and lift the spirits of the elderly resident of the home.
“A core component of Varsity College’s philosophy is to encourage students to engage in good citizenship, positive community involvement and excellent workplace preparations. A perfect example of community involvement is the Tea Party for Reuven Old Age Home. The fact that the younger generation honours their elderly in this way, just reinforces the respect that they feel towards them", Vasanthee Govender, Student Relations Manager at Varsity College Sandton said of the event.

The event takes place at Beachwood Country Club on 23 September; and is a culmination of teamwork between the sports management 2nd year students, the Student Liaison Body and the VC Cares group.

“Students at Varsity College are encouraged, as part of Varsity College’s educational philosophy of developing students holistically, to maintain a healthy balance between their studies and sport, social, cultural and community engagement activities”, says Jeanie Budd, National Student Relations Manager of Varsity College.

This will ensure that parents have a home away from home to be close to their children who are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and any other procedures.
The partnership we have with Varsity College is ongoing and not a once off. Their commitment to ‘KEEPING MORE THAN HOPE ALIVE” for children with cancer and related life threatening blood disorders is constant”.

Varsity College Sports Stars Shine
Varsity College Westville hosted the inter-campus sports day recently at Westville Old Boys Sports Club. The 3 Kwazulu-Natal campuses, Westville, Durban North and Pietermartizburg competed for the title of sports day champs. Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball, Netball, Touch Rugby and Tug of war were the platforms of contest. Many students made their way to the fields to show support for their campuses. With a very close spread of points Varsity College Durban North came out tops in the inter-campus sports day ,closely followed by Varsity College Westville and then Varsity College PMB.

Clearasil Awesome Face of the Day Varsity Challenge Winner Announced
Clearasil is proud to announce that outgoing, popular, confident Thato Choma from Varsity College Sandton is the overall winner of the Clearasil Awesome Face of the Day Varsity Challenge. After months of campaigning, Thato amassed the most votes and will soon be jetting off on an all-expenses-paid trip to Zurich to represent Clearasil and Varsity College at the One Young World Conference where she will be networking with the likes of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Bob Geldof and Wyclef Jean.
From 200 girls to 5 to one!
Two hundred remarkable young women were selected from five universities around the country to represent their institution in the Clearasil Varsity Challenge. The girls were provided with personalised business cards to assist them in their quest to get the most votes on Facebook.com/ClearasilSouthAfrica. One finalist (the girl with the most votes) from each of the five universities – Tshwane University of Technology, University of the Free State, University of Johannesburg, Stellenbosch University and Varsity College Sandton - made it to Phase 2 the Varsity Challenge.
Each entrant received a Clearasil product hamper and the Finalist from each university was able to donate R10 000.00 to a charity of the University’s choice.
The second stage of the Clearasil Awesome Face of the Day Varsity Challenge required the top 5 to compete against each other for the grand prize – a seat at the One Young World Summit. In a hotly contested final, Thato received 9745 votes over the period and walked away a worthy winner.
‘’My heart is filled with so much gratitude and excitement. It is such an honour to be representing Varsity College and Clearasil South Africa. I will only give of my best. Team Thato to Zurich and beyond,’’ said Thato on her win.

Its purpose is to connect and bring together the youngest and brightest and to ensure that their concerns, opinions and solutions are heard and taken into account by those in power whether in government, business or any other sector. Since the first summit in London in 2010, 823 under-25s from 114 countries have been making real on-the-ground impacts in global business, media, environment, interfaith dialogue, global health, and political leadership development, reducing poverty in the most innovative ways, making our future brighter.
In this light, One Young World, which is founded by David Jones, Global CEO of Havas Worldwide and Kate Robertson, UK Group Chairman of Euro RSCG, was most recently honoured at the Clinton Global Initiative where Bill Clinton thanked David Jones for creating One Young World, recognising it as an invaluable vehicle in the global business call-to-action on major development issues.
At the 2011 Summit Thato will be raising issues important to her. There is no doubt that Thato will fly the flag high for Varsity College, South Africa and Clearasil.

The 2011 Varsity College Pietermaritzburg School’s Quiz (now in its eighth year) was held at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds on 27 August. The quiz is a collaboration between Varsity College, The Natal Witness and the South African Institute for International Affairs (SAIIA).
The event buzzed with 46 teams, from 28 schools taking part. Students were taken through their paces with questions taken from The Natal Witness daily editions from 1 – 19 August. The questions all related to the categories of International Politics and General, International Entertainment, Lifestyle and Sport, South African Politics and General, South African Entertainment, Lifestyle and Sport, Environmental Affairs, KZN Local and General.
A high standard was maintained by all and the school students showed just how seriously they take the quiz and staying informed and abreast of local and international affairs.
Carter High has dominated this quiz for the last few years, but were pipped to first and second place by King Edward High from Matatiele. Carter High came in third this year, and congratulations were extended to the winners and all who took part.

Varsity College Opens New Campus in Midrand
Giving more students the opportunity to take life to the next level.

Exciting Degree option for students
Varsity College, an educational brand of the Independent Institute of Education (the IIE), is proud to announce the successful accreditation of a new degree - the Bachelor of Arts degree in Corporate Communication, which will be conferred by the IIE . The 3 year degree is at level 7 on the Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF) and accredited by the Council for Higher Education. The degree will be introduced at Varsity College in 2012. Interested students are invited to apply.

USSA Cycling Tour
VC also entered a team into the USSA Cycling Tour that took place from 28 June – 1 July! This was the 1st time VC competed in a USSA Cycling Tour and it was a great experience for the 3 students Robert Du Preez (Durban North), Tyrone Seaton-Smith and Jared Milford (Sandton). It was a long week of racing with the MTB race taking place on 1st day and then the students had to endure 4 days of stage races and over 200km of road cycling in the Magaliesburg area. Despite the USSA Cycling Tour being focused on road racing we gained a lot of experience and will go better prepared next year!

It was great to see a competitive team of 8 men and 2 ladies from the CPT and Durban North campuses participating in the event, with Durban North student Scott Lefevre also making it through to the semi finals! Tammy, Shawn and Scott did VC proud as they all made the USSA team for 2011!

PVM Energy Bar Varsity College National Action Sports Weekend
The PVM Energy Bar Varsity College National Action Sports Weekend took place for the 3rd time from 8 to 10 July in Durban. Once again all VC campuses sent their finest action netball, soccer, and cricket teams to compete for top honours. One team even boasted 4 provincial players!
Although tense rivalry and competition existed, there was a real sense of camaraderie, not only among the players from the same campuses, but from the same province. Students really enjoyed the interaction with their fellow campuses and really got to know each other better.
Despite the social interaction that seemed to be the main focus of the weekend, everyone’s eye was still on the prize. Everyone had to wait for the very last ball to be bowled and the last minute of games to conclude to find out who the overall winners would be, that's just how tight the competition was.
The Westville Cowboys were crowned overall winners thanks to their last ball victory in the action cricket as well as a very close victory in the action netball. Final results were as follows: Action Cricket...Westville Cowboys (gold) Pretoria Bulldozers (silver) Sandton Knights (bronze) Action Soccer: Pietermaritzburg Mammoths (gold) Pretoria Bulldozers (silver) PE Coastal Kings (bronze) Action Netball: Westville Cowboys (gold) Durban North Pirates (silver) Sandton Knights (bronze) The Cape Town Vipers could not stop singing and being joyous the entire weekend and were deservingly awarded the Christo Petzer Spirit trophy for the second year in a row. Right behind the overall winners, the Westville Cowboys, The Pretoria Bulldozers came 2nd overall, followed by the Sandton Knights in 3rd. Varsity College is very grateful to PVM Nutritional Sciences for sponsoring the event and for being the fuel powering our sports teams for the rest of 2011.

Will the Westville Cowboys or Durban North Pirates triumph again on home soil...or will the Gauteng campuses, the Sandton Knights or the Pretoria Bulldozers, show their metal against the coastal campuses! Maybe the CPT Vipers who won the Spirit award last time convert some of their great sportsmanship into some great on field performances and take home take one the winners trophies away from Maritzburg Mammoths! The PE Coastal Kings who have been on the knocking on the door of the finals in previous years could be in with a chance! It all boils down to the training and preparation done leading up to the tournament! Good luck and all the best to all students participating!

VC CHOC Charity Challenge
As part of our ongoing community engagement programme and in association with CHOC(Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa) we will be hosting our annual Golf Days around the country beginning on Friday the 29th of July. Varsity College, with its national footprint of seven campuses situated in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town is proud to be associated with CHOC, a national charity organisation. The golf days will be a joint effort by Varsity College’s VC Cares, the Student Liaison Body and the 2nd year Sports Management students. The Sport Management students co-ordinate the events as part of their Work Integrated Learning (WIL), a fundamental component of their syllabus where they are required to put what is learnt in the lecture room into practice. Varsity College would like to invite you to become involved in this exciting annual event that is an integral part of the Varsity College Sports and Community Engagement calendar.

The purpose of VC Cares is to create awareness and involve the wider student body in community projects with the aim of helping those less fortunate. The main focus is on social responsibility and empowerment. The students work with the Student Relations Manager to identify local charities and communities that will benefit from organized projects and fundraising activities.
The national beneficiary chosen for all our golf days this year is CHOC. CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA, a national organisation, provides direct practical help to children with cancer from diagnosis onwards. CHOC is not funded by government, but rather by donations, sponsorships and its own fundraising initiatives. This golf day is one such initiative; the funds raised will be used to provide ongoing support to children with cancer and their families.
“Cancer takes an enormous emotional toll on everyone it touches, but it is possible to survive its ravages and end up stronger, wiser and more compassionate for having endured the journey.” For further information please check the website www.choc.org.za

Second semester registration
Varsity College’s 2nd semester registration for UNISA degrees and IMM diplomas, and, on select campuses, the Higher Certificate in Business Principles and Practice (HCBPP) opens on 20 th June and closes end July. Lectures for the UNISA degrees will commence on 11th June and on the 18th of June for the IMM and HCBPP diploma. All new students will be oriented into ‘Taking Life to the Next Level’ with Varsity College before lectures start. For more information contact your nearest campus to speak to a Student Advisor.
Varsity College Beach walk
Why not spend the morning of Saturday 20 August, walking Durban's north coastline, socialising with friends and family whilst raising funds for the North Durban Honorary Officers and the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve? Last year's walkers raved about the event The cause is grand and green and the scenery is breathtaking. You can choose between the 10km or 5km route starting at Shipwreck Beach and Virginia Beach respectively and ending in the heart of the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve. Shopping centre vouchers are up for grabs for first across the finish line for both distances and a lucky draw for all entrants. Callie Watts, surfski club captain, together with her paddling partner Shaun Simpson won the Short Course category in the first race of the Surfski Winter series. They came 2nd in their 2nd race only 20 seconds behind the leaders.
Sandton
The outdoor cricket team played their first match at Zoo Lake and it was a nail biting finish with our team narrowly losing in the final over!
PMB
The girl’s hockey team are progressing nicely each week and working hard on developing a strong team. They played against DUT and drew 2 all which a great result for a newly formed team.
Durban North
The action netball team played against Wii Not Fit and came out on top by four goals. The team have pulled together nicely and have improved drastically over the season.
Pretoria
The action hockey team played two matches and managed to win their first match by 13-9 but lost their second match 12-9.
PE
The action cricket team played a double header last week, the 1st game was against Pappa Carlies which they won convincingly by 71 runs but ended up losing the 2nd match by 4 runs in the final over.
Cape Town
The action netball girls played in the bronze medal match and won the game 26 – 16, a well deserved win.
The official launch of the Varsity College Tigers is on 4 June at the Durban North campus. Come and support our team! The day will be filled with action packed rugby, entertainment, competition and prizes. The day kicks off at 11.30am with a touch rugby tournament and the 1st team game starts at 3.30pm!

Preparing for exams
It's that time again. Say goodbye to fingernails, goodbye to your social life and goodbye to sleep. Say hello to lots of reading, hello to your notebook, (your new BFF), and hello to feeling confident (if you follow the below suggestions)! Exams are looming, but don't start stressing just yet.
1. Give yourself enough time to study. Don't leave it until the last minute. Despite what people say, cramming all the information into your brain the night before isn't the best way to approach an exam. Set out a timetable for your study.
2. Organise your study space. Make sure you have enough space to spread your textbooks and notes out. Have you got enough light? Is your chair comfortable? Are your computer games out of sight? Try and get rid of all distractions and then arrange your books into piles.
3. Design a flow chart. This is a bit like brainstorming, but instead of coming up with new ideas, you're writing down everything you already know about a topic. Put it in an easy to follow diagram with key points that you can easily replicate in an exam. That way, when the exam starts, you can spend five minutes preparing for your answer and then expand on your ideas.
4. Practice on old exams. It's always good to find out what kind of questions are going to be in the exam and the best way is too look through old exams. That will give you an idea of the layout of an exam, the number of short answers and long answers there will be and the amount of time you should be giving each section.
5. Explain your answers to others. Parents and little brothers and sisters don't have to be annoying around exam time. Use them to your advantage. Explain an answer to a question to them. That will help you to get it clear in your head.
6. Organise study groups with your friends. You may have questions that they have the answers to and vice versa. You're social life doesn't have to be non-existent during study times. Grab a pizza and your textbooks and get studying with your mates.
7. Take a break. Don't force yourself to sit studying for 24 hours a day. If you're training for a marathon you don't try and run 24 hours a day. Develop a study routine that works for you. If you study better in the morning, then start early before taking a break at lunchtime. Do something mindless in the afternoon and then start studying again in the evening if you know you're more productive at night. Don't feel guilty that you're out enjoying the sunshine instead of hunched over your textbooks. Vitamin D is important for the brain!

You need to fuel your body while you study so make sure you eat nutritious food that has been proven to help your brain focus such as fish, nuts, yoghurt and blueberries.

If you start to feel yourself fade halfway through your exam, just pop a sweet into your mouth and you'll be away again.

Students offer Reach for a dream children a very welcome break
During the first semester each of the seven Varsity College campuses host either a ‘Captain Courage’ or ‘Queen for a Day’ event for children of the Reach for a Dream Foundation. The purpose of these events is to give boys and girls who have been diagnosed with life threatening illnesses a welcome break by spoiling and entertaining them for the day. Students get involved in the co-ordination and hosting of the events, which have become prominent on the Varsity College first semester community outreach calendars. Career centre success
Through the career centre we aim to develop and support our students in their journey through tertiary studies and prepare them for employment. A perfect example of this is Pearl Boshomane. She is the first Varsity College student to be accepted into Avusa's internship programme. Avusa has, to date, only accepted interns from the major journalism tertiaries - Rhodes and Wits which makes this a gigantic win for Varsity College and we’re proud of Pearl’s achievements.
Pearl, a 2010 Diploma in Journalism from Varsity College (Sandton ) graduate, had this to say, "The two years I spent studying journalism at Varsity College were two years well spent. The practical work we did – from working as mini-journalists on the campus paper to becoming its editorial team – and the incredible, experienced lecturers were of great help when it came to journeying into the real world of journalism. Settling in at Varsity College is really easy
With student support services such as ADCs (Academic Development Coordinators), SRMs (Student Relations Managers), Librarians and Sport and Social Coordinators dedicated to assisting students, the Varsity College first years tend to find the transformation from secondary to tertiary education to be a relatively smooth experience. With some of the first years having spent almost a month in lectures already, the academic year is in full swing!
'O' what fun!
The Varsity College first years were welcomed onto their respective campuses following Varsity College ‘O WEEK’ tradition, and for most, this proved to be an unforgettable experience!!
The formal events such as the symbolic opening address, which was attended by first years, their parents, lecturers and Varsity College staff and ‘’SSUP (Student Support Unplugged) where students met their academic staff and were given their timetables, went a long way towards preparing students for the start of their academic year.
The informal events such as the ‘O GAMES’ and pub lunches facilitated the forming of new friendships with fellow students – a component vital to social side of Varsity College life!

IF YOU MISSED THE UNISA REGISTRATION DEADLINE, THERE IS STILL HOPE!!
Varsity College offers the Pathway to a UNISA degree, which assist students with academic readiness for studying towards a UNISA degree. So, if you missed the UNISA registration deadline, hurry and see a Student Advisor on one of our campuses for a very sensible solution!
O’WEEK FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS
All first year students are invited (and strongly encouraged) to participate in O’Week (Orientation Week). O’Week for Degree and IMM students commences on 24 January and for Diploma and Certificate students on 14 February 2011. This is the perfect opportunity for first year students to meet and mingle in a fun and interactive way with other new students, making the first academic day on campus that much less daunting.

CLASSES COMMENCE
Classes commence anytime between Tuesday 25 January and Monday 28 February, depending on the programme. If you are still unsure of when classes commence for your particular programme, please be sure to contact your campus to confirm.

2011 Registration
Registration for 2011 is well under-way. If you’re wanting to study at Varsity College this year, please call your nearest campus and schedule an appointment with a student Advisor who will happily advise you on the various programme options available to you, as well as guide you through the registration process.
Registration will remain open until classes commence or until capacity has been reached so the earlier you register, the better.
The following information must be submitted with the Registration Form and Contract of Enrolment:
SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENTS
- Certified copy of the student’s ID (for 1st registrations only)
- Certified copy of the account payer’s ID
- Certified copy of the Senior Certificate / National Senior Certificate or statement of results (for 1st time registrations only)
- Passport size photograph
- Where applicable, proof of registration with external examining body
FOREIGN STUDENTS
- Certified copy of the student’s ID (for 1st registrations only)
- Certified copy of the account payer’s ID
- Certified copy of valid Study Permit made out to the IIE
- Certified copy of the Senior Certificate equivalent qualification, original SAQA evaluation of qualification, original translation of documents in foreign language
- Where applicable, proof of registration with external examining body
